Mandarin Language Proficiency for Taiwan Citizenship

Taiwan requires applicants for naturalization to demonstrate Mandarin proficiency. This can be done by passing a language test at the household registration office or by presenting proof of sufficient hours of study at a recognized language school or university in Taiwan.

For those who prefer not to take the test, alternatives include completing a set number of hours at an officially recognized school. The required hours depend on individual circumstances:

  • 200 hours for standard applications.
  • 100 hours if the applicant was adopted by a Taiwanese citizen, born in Taiwan, the guardian of a Taiwanese national, or has lived in Taiwan for over 10 years.
  • 72 hours if the applicant has a Taiwanese parent, is married to a Taiwanese national (including those divorced or widowed), has Taiwanese children, or is aged 65 or older.

Graduates from Taiwanese universities can present their graduation certificate instead of taking the test. However, online tests are generally not accepted for meeting this requirement.
