Former Taiwan EPA Official Detained in Sexual Assault Case

High-Profile Allegations Prompt Detention and Ministry of Environment Response

Taipei, April 22 – The Taichung District Court has ordered the detention of a former Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) official, Lee Chien-yu (李健育), amid accusations of sexual assault against subordinates between 2022 and 2023. This case highlights concerns about workplace conduct within Taiwan's governmental agencies.

The detention follows an investigation triggered by a police report to prosecutors in December 2024.

The Taichung District Prosecutors Office stated that Lee Chien-yu (李健育) was detained on suspicion of sexual assault and forced sexual intercourse after a search of his residence and questioning on April 17th.

According to the Control Yuan, leaders at the EPA Inspectorate were first informed of the allegations against Lee in July 2023.

In October 2023, the agency deemed the accusers' claims credible, as noted in a report by the top government watchdog released late last year.

Lee Chien-yu (李健育) resigned in September 2023 and was officially dismissed from the Inspectorate, now part of the Ministry of Environment's (MOENV) Environmental Management Administration, in February 2024.

Deputy Minister of Environment Shih Wen-chen (施文真) stated on Tuesday that the MOENV has not received an official request for information from the prosecutors' office regarding the case.

Shih Wen-chen (施文真) added that both former Minister Shieu Fuh-sheng (薛富盛) and current Minister Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) are taking the matter seriously, as emphasized during a green-lifestyle promotional event.

Shih Wen-chen (施文真) stated that Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) is focused on transparency and aims to address the issue proactively, offering support for those affected and promoting a safe working environment.
