Taiwan Cyclists Injured in Head-On Collision: Driver Blames Distraction

Seven Students from Kang Chiao International School Injured During Cycling Trip After Driver's Error

A cycling team from Kang Chiao International School in Taiwan was involved in a serious accident today. Seven students sustained injuries after being struck by a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old air conditioning installer, Mr. Xiao. The incident occurred in Changhua County during a planned cycling tour for the school's second-year students.

Mr. Xiao, speaking to media outlets while being transported to the hospital, attributed the collision to a momentary lapse of attention. He stated he was reaching down to pick up an item inside the car, causing him to inadvertently veer off course and cross the center line.

According to reports, Mr. Xiao was driving from Shetou Township to Chutang Township for work. The accident happened on the third section of Zhangshui Road in Pitou Township. His vehicle crossed the road's center line and collided head-on with the Kang Chiao International School cycling team. The impact resulted in one student losing consciousness, two suffering from fractures, and four sustaining head and limb abrasions.

The unconscious student was immediately transferred to Changhua Christian Hospital. Initial assessments indicated a coma scale of 3, along with severe facial and left arm lacerations. The remaining six injured students were conscious and reportedly in stable condition.
