Tragedy Strikes NTUH Renovation Site: Authorities Investigate Potential Safety Violations

Taipei, Taiwan – In a tragic incident, an Indonesian migrant worker lost his life after a scaffolding collapse at the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) renovation project. The accident, which occurred on Monday, April 22nd, prompted immediate rescue efforts, but ultimately resulted in a fatal outcome.

The collapse took place in front of NTUH's East Campus, with the scaffolding landing on a nearby vehicle. Initial reports did not indicate any casualties. However, it was soon discovered that a 49-year-old Indonesian migrant worker was missing and potentially trapped within the debris.

After an extensive overnight search, rescue teams located the worker's body early Tuesday morning. The city government reported that he was found deceased, trapped within the collapsed scaffolding. The sheer volume of fallen materials initially hampered rescue efforts, as authorities were forced to wait for the construction unit to manually remove the debris.

The removal operation continued into the early hours of Tuesday, culminating in the grim discovery of the worker's body on the third floor of the collapsed structure. The city government indicated that the worker was crushed by the fallen materials.

The Taipei City's Labor Inspection Office, operating under the Department of Labor, has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that the construction company may have overloaded the scaffolding with construction materials, exceeding its weight limits. The office is now examining whether the worker's employer and on-site personnel will face criminal charges for alleged violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
