Taipei Bus Crash: Nine Injured, Operator Vows Action

Taipei, Taiwan - A bus collision in Taipei on Sunday resulted in injuries to nine individuals, prompting Metropolitan Transport Corp. (MTC), the operator of the involved buses, to issue a formal apology and commit to enhanced safety measures.

The incident occurred on Zhongxiao East Road Section 3 in Da'an District, involving two buses operating on the No. 262 route, according to police reports.

Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred due to the second bus driver's failure to maintain a safe distance and apply brakes appropriately. The 46-year-old driver stated he failed to stop in time, leading his bus to rear-end the lead bus, which was stopped at a red light.

Seven passengers from the rear bus, along with the driver of the front bus and one additional passenger, were transported to four hospitals for medical attention. All injured individuals were conscious, with most suffering minor injuries.

Breathalyzer tests confirmed both drivers were sober, and their driving licenses were valid. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the collision.

MTC has taken responsibility for the incident, issuing an apology and promising to cover all medical expenses for the injured parties. In addition, each person will receive NT$3,000 (approximately US$92) in compensation, along with an additional NT$1,000 to cover transportation costs upon discharge from the hospital.

According to the Taipei City Public Transportation Office, initial assessments indicate the accident was caused by the second bus driver's failure to observe traffic conditions effectively.
