Taichung Intersection Chaos: Semi-Truck Crash Injures Nine

Taichung, Taiwan - A chaotic scene unfolded in Taichung's Shalu District on Sunday, April 27th, as a semi-trailer truck, reportedly experiencing brake failure, plowed into over 20 vehicles at a busy intersection, leaving nine people injured.

The Taichung Fire Bureau responded swiftly to the incident, receiving the report at 10:13 a.m. and dispatching eight fire trucks and five ambulances to the scene at the intersection of Xiangshan Road Section 7 and Pingxi Road.

Upon arrival, first responders transported the nine injured motorists to Kuang Tien General Hospital's Xiangshan branch. The bureau reported that all injured individuals were conscious and primarily sustained cuts and bruises.

Preliminary investigations by the Taichung Police Department suggest the accident stemmed from a semi-truck's brake failure while traveling north on Xiangshan Road, Section 6. The truck subsequently lost control.

As it approached Pingxi Road, the semi-truck collided with at least 10 cars, 11 motorcycles, and one bicycle from behind. The resulting impact caused multiple non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 25-year-old man surnamed Hsieh (謝), was not found to have any alcohol in his system. Police confirmed that the exact cause of the accident and the determination of legal responsibility are still under investigation.

Footage and images from the scene depicted widespread damage, with numerous vehicles mangled, roadside trees knocked down, and debris from the semi-truck scattered across the intersection.

As of Sunday afternoon, the police redirected northbound traffic on Xiangshan Road to Xitun Road to prevent further congestion in the accident area.
