Taipei, Taiwan – April 8th, Xiaoliuqiu Island, a jewel off the coast of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, is set to embark on a new chapter. In a landmark development, the island will receive its very first traffic light in August, according to a recent announcement by the Pingtung County government.

The installation of the traffic light is part of a comprehensive plan spearheaded by the National Bureau of Land Management to bolster road safety, particularly in areas surrounding school campuses. Chen Pin-chen (陳品蓁), a representative from the Pingtung County Police Bureau's traffic division, confirmed the details in a press briefing.

The strategically placed traffic light will be situated at the intersection of Fuxing and Xiangpu roads, close to Cyuande Elementary School. This location was selected due to the high traffic volume resulting from the island's thriving economic and tourism sectors, explained Chen.

The police department anticipates completing a final inspection of the traffic light in July, with operations expected to commence sometime in August. This milestone marks a significant infrastructural advancement for the island.

The news has sparked a range of reactions among the island's community, which welcomes over 1 million tourists annually, contrasting with a permanent resident population of approximately 12,000.
