AmCham Taiwan Calls for U.S. Trade Action Exemption, Highlighting Strong Bilateral Ties

Taipei, April 8 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham Taiwan) has voiced strong concerns regarding potential new tariffs from the U.S. administration and is advocating for Taiwan's exemption from these trade actions. This call underscores the deep economic partnership and the importance of maintaining stable U.S.-Taiwan relations.

In a recent statement addressing the U.S. President's decision to potentially impose import duties, AmCham Taiwan urged support from Congressional allies and Washington officials to protect Taiwan from trade measures that could negatively impact the bilateral relationship.

AmCham Taiwan highlighted the risk that such actions could "jeopardize the stability and trust underpinning the U.S.-Taiwan relationship," and called for expedited talks between Washington and Taipei to resolve the matter.

AmCham Taiwan Chairperson Dan Silver emphasized the crucial role of free and fair trade practices and sound economic policies that foster productivity and predictability. He stated that, “Certainty and stability are essential for our members to operate effectively and contribute to healthy, sustainable economic development.”

AmCham Taiwan urged both governments to negotiate the lowest possible tariffs while ensuring transparency, clarity, and fairness.

Silver also expressed support for President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) commitment to the U.S. partnership, especially his call for reciprocal tariff reductions and market alignment.

Silver further stated, "Taiwan has long acted in good faith to address trade imbalances and remains a reliable partner to the United States."

Echoing economic perspectives, AmCham Taiwan questioned the justification for the tariffs, particularly considering the trade imbalance facts and the broad contributions that Taiwan makes to the bilateral partnership.

The statement added that "As one of the world's most innovative economies...Taiwan has long contributed to U.S. competitiveness and resilience across key industries," emphasizing the significant contributions of Taiwan to the global economy.
