Taiwan Watches as Trump Doubles Down on Tariffs, Fueling Global Economic Uncertainty
The US President's Stance on Tariffs Sends Ripples Across the Globe, Impacting Trade and Allies.

US President Donald Trump, in a move that has sent shockwaves through the global financial markets, has reaffirmed his commitment to sweeping tariffs on imports. Speaking from aboard Air Force One, Trump indicated he would not back down on his plans unless nations even out their trade imbalances with the US. This resolute stance has heightened fears of a recession and continues to destabilize the global trading system, a situation closely observed by Taiwan.
Trump, while acknowledging the market's volatility, expressed a belief that the tariffs were a necessary "medicine" to fix underlying trade issues. His comments came amidst continued sharp declines in global financial markets. His aides, however, sought to ease concerns, stating that over 50 nations had expressed interest in negotiating to lift the tariffs.
“I spoke to a lot of leaders, European, Asian, from all over the world,” Trump said. “They’re dying to make a deal and I said: ‘We’re not going to have deficits with your country. We’re not going to do that, because to me a deficit is a loss. We’re going to have surpluses, or at worst, going to be breaking even.”
The tariffs are scheduled to take effect, ushering in an era of economic uncertainty. The exact duration and impact of these tariffs remain unclear, and are closely watched by the island nation of Taiwan.
US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent acknowledged that resolving unfair trade practices is not a quick process, requiring careful evaluation of offers from various countries to determine their credibility.
Trump's Cabinet members, including economic advisors, have defended the tariffs, downplaying potential negative consequences. Bessent expressed optimism about building long-term economic fundamentals for prosperity, despite market reactions.
Following the tariff announcements, nations are scrambling to formulate their responses, with countries like China quickly retaliating. Top White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett noted that affected nations are expressing their concerns but also engaging in negotiations. The Office of the US Trade Representative has reported that over 50 countries have contacted the White House to commence discussions.
The impact of the new tariffs extends to both US allies and adversaries, including Israel, which is facing a 17 percent tariff. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was preparing for a White House visit and press conference, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reportedly planned a telephone conversation with Trump. Vietnam, a major manufacturing hub, has also engaged with the administration, with its leader expressing a desire to reduce tariffs to zero through a US agreement.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a significant European partner, has expressed disagreement with Trump's actions while vowing to utilize all available tools to support affected businesses. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick confirmed the imminent implementation of the tariffs, emphasizing their role in resetting global trade, though he indicated they would stay in place for "days and weeks."
