Taiwan Railway Fare Hike: Navigating the New Prices from Taipei to Kaohsiung

The Taiwan Railway (台鐵) has confirmed a fare adjustment, impacting travel costs across its network. Following a board meeting on February 5th, the decision was made to implement a fare increase with a reduced maximum rise of 26.8%. This will result in a maximum price of NT$975 for a journey between Taipei and Kaohsiung.

The proposed fare adjustments were initially submitted to the board last September, outlining three scenarios based on potential return rates of 3%, 4%, and 5%. These plans proposed average fare increases of 35.62%, 40.41%, and 44.52%, respectively. However, the board initially rejected these proposals, requiring the submission of additional supporting documentation.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' (交通部) Deputy Minister, 伍勝園, announced that the Executive Yuan has approved the fare adjustment plan. The new fares are scheduled to take effect on June 23rd.
