Taiwan Faces Economic Headwinds: Concerns Rise Over US Tariffs

The recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the United States, under the leadership of President Trump, has sent ripples throughout global markets, with Taiwan particularly impacted by a 32% tariff. This development has prompted concerns within Taiwan, specifically from local officials.

許淑華, the Magistrate of Nantou County, voiced strong criticism, alleging that the current leadership under 賴清德 has left Taiwan vulnerable on the international stage. She urged the central government to take immediate action, including potentially halting major initiatives and collaborating with opposition parties to support businesses facing these economic hurdles.

許淑華 highlighted that each county in Taiwan has its own economic focus. While Nantou County primarily relies on tourism and agriculture, it also boasts a significant number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and is actively developing industrial parks. As a response to the tariffs, she has instructed the Construction Department and the Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Committee to thoroughly assess the challenges faced by local businesses and identify areas where assistance is needed.
