Clash of Titans: Political Rivalry Erupts During Taiwan's Mazu Pilgrimage

The annual pilgrimage of the Dajia Mazu (大甲媽祖) reached a dramatic point last night as the procession crossed the Xiluo Bridge (西螺大橋) into Yunlin County, Taiwan. A heated exchange erupted between prominent political figures, sparking controversy and highlighting the complexities of local politics.

The incident involved the Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan (張麗善) of the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Xiluo Township Mayor Liao Chiu-ping (廖秋萍) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The tension unfolded as the Mazu palanquin made its way across the bridge. According to tradition, Chang Li-shan, along with her county government team, traditionally greets the palanquin on the bridge. However, Liao Chiu-ping also made her presence known, leading to a physical confrontation.

Reports indicate that as Chang Li-shan attempted to pay respects at the palanquin, Liao Chiu-ping also tried to take a position at the palanquin's supporting structure. The exchange escalated, with Chang Li-shan requesting Liao Chiu-ping to yield, a request which was declined.

Yan Qing-biao (顏清標), the Chairman of the Zhenlan Temple (鎮瀾宮), who was present at the scene, remained silent at the time of the clash. Later today, during the Mazu's arrival in Yuanchang Township, Yan Qing-biao was interviewed and appealed for unity. He stated that everyone was there to welcome the Mazu and should avoid damaging the harmony by engaging in disputes.
