裕隆 Responds: Addressing Criticism and Defending Taiwan's Automotive Industry

Following discussions sparked by potential US tariffs on Taiwan, specifically a 32% levy, 裕隆 has issued a statement in response to recent criticisms. The company is reacting to comments made by 民進黨立委 (DPP Legislator) 王世堅 (Wang Shijian), who characterized 裕隆 as "扶不起的阿斗 (Fubuqi de Adou)," a term that suggests someone incapable of being supported.

裕隆 firmly states that online commentary often misrepresents the complexities of the Taiwanese automotive industry. They assert that these interpretations fail to grasp the complete picture and frequently oversimplify the situation.

In a statement released on their official website, 裕隆 emphasized that the potential US tariffs impact the entire industry ecosystem, not just individual companies. The 國產車 (domestically produced car) sector in Taiwan encompasses various manufacturers, including those with ties to Japanese, Korean, American, and Taiwanese brands. The industry's reach extends to a wide range of component suppliers and upstream material industries, such as steel, rubber, plastics, glass, and machinery. Furthermore, it involves the increasingly significant electrical and electronic components that constitute a substantial portion of vehicle costs.

裕隆 highlights the economic impact of the automotive industry. They cite economic research indicating that every 100 direct jobs in automotive manufacturing generate 1,428 indirect employment opportunities. They position the industry as a strategic one with substantial spillover effects compared to other durable goods industries.
