Heartbreak in Taiwan: Mother of Abandoned Newborn Faces Prosecution

Taipei, April 3 - In a deeply unsettling case, authorities in Taiwan have referred the mother of a deceased newborn baby for prosecution after the infant's body was discovered in a cardboard box.

The Chiayi County Police Department's Budai Precinct announced on Thursday that they had identified the woman through diligent investigation, including door-to-door inquiries. The breakthrough came after a search of surveillance footage failed to provide any immediate leads.

Initial examination of the infant revealed no apparent injuries. The presence of livor mortis, coupled with the umbilical cord still attached, offered crucial clues to investigators.

With no reports of neighbors hearing any cries, investigators suspect the baby was deceased at the time of abandonment.

Authorities believe the mother, who is reportedly married, successfully concealed the pregnancy from her family, possibly due to her physical characteristics.

Police investigations indicate that the woman did not receive any prenatal care. The precise circumstances of the baby's death are still under investigation, as it remains unclear whether the infant was stillborn in late March or passed away shortly after birth.

Investigators believe the mother placed the baby's body inside a cardboard box and left it at an abandoned residence in Budai Township.

Reports indicate that the woman returned on the night of April 1st to check on the infant, and it was at this time that the box was placed outside the building, according to police.

An autopsy is scheduled for April 9th. The goal is to determine the exact cause of death, as stated by prosecutors.
