Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg Television shortly after Trump's statement, Bessent advised against immediate retaliation and instead, encouraged a wait-and-see approach, emphasizing the potential for future negotiations.

"I would not attempt to retaliate," Bessent stated. "If you don't retaliate, the highest tariff rate will be the number we have today."
