President Lai made these remarks at the "International Rotary 3523 District 2025 District Annual Conference Opening Ceremony". "We probably did not expect President Trump to propose reciprocal tariff policies so quickly, impacting Taiwan and, of course, affecting the entire world," he stated.

President Lai confirmed that Taiwan is among the first nations to engage in discussions with the United States regarding the potential tariffs. Furthermore, he confirmed that negotiations occurred the previous evening, describing the process as successful.
