Taiwan Eyes China's Escalating Tariffs: A New Chapter in US-China Trade Tensions

The ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China continues to intensify. In a move likely to send ripples through global markets, China announced on May 11, that it would increase tariffs on US goods to 125%, mirroring the latest US increases on Chinese imports.

Chinese authorities stated that "in view of the current tariff levels, there is no possibility of market acceptance" for American goods entering China. Furthermore, China asserted that it "will not heed" any further US tariff increases on Chinese exports.

The Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council issued an official announcement on May 11, that starting April 10, 2025, the US government will further increase the tariff rate to 125% on goods from China. China strongly condemned the US for imposing "excessive" tariffs, stating that these actions "seriously violate international economic and trade rules" and are "contrary to basic economic laws and common sense, and are completely unilateral bullying and coercion."
