In a move that has sent ripples across global markets, former US President **Trump** announced a significant shift in US trade policy, with immediate implications for Taiwan and the wider world. The announcement, made early on October 10th (Taiwan time), centers on a dual approach to tariffs.

Responding to requests from numerous countries, **Trump** stated that he would temporarily hold off on raising retaliatory tariffs for 90 days. Seventy-five nations, which have engaged in discussions with the US regarding trade issues, are now subject to a 10% retaliatory tariff rate. However, the situation with China presents a stark contrast.

Citing a "lack of respect" from Beijing, the former President declared that tariffs on Chinese imports would be increased to 125%.

In a statement posted on the "Truth Social" platform at 1:18 PM Eastern Time, **Trump** declared: "Given China's disrespect towards the global marketplace, I am now announcing an increase of US tariffs on China to 125%, effective immediately. Hopefully, in the near future, China will realize that the days of exploiting America and other countries will no longer continue or be acceptable. Conversely, based on the fact that over 75 countries have contacted representatives of the United States, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative, to discuss issues related to trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs, and these countries, under my strong recommendation, have not retaliated against the United States in any way, shape, or form, I have authorized a 90-day pause and, during this time, a significant reduction of retaliatory tariffs to 10%, also effective immediately.
