Trade Tensions Escalate: China Retaliates with Increased Tariffs on US Goods

The ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China continues to intensify. Following previous retaliatory measures by China, the US increased tariffs on Chinese goods. In response, on the evening of April 9th, Beijing announced a significant increase in tariffs on all American imports, raising the duty rate to 84%, effective from 12:01 AM on April 10th.

The China's State Council Tariff Commission issued a statement on that day, highlighting the US government's decision on April 8th to increase tariffs on Chinese goods from 34% to 84%, a measure of "equal tariffs". "The US's escalation of tariffs against China is a mistake on top of a mistake, seriously infringing upon China's legitimate rights and interests and seriously damaging the rules-based multilateral trading system," the Commission stated.
