Taipei's First-Ever Street Closure for Event Draws Praise from Japanese Visitors
MRT's Event in Zhongshan District Showcases Pedestrian-Friendly Initiatives

Taipei's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system recently hosted its first-ever street closure event, transforming the Zhongshan Metro Mall's Xinzhongshan linear park into a pedestrian-only zone. The event, which involved a 2.5-hour traffic control period, aimed to create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere for attendees. The initiative saw a significant influx of visitors, with people enjoying leisurely strolls within the designated area, while occasional access was granted to vehicles belonging to residents and businesses.
The local 里長 (community chief) noted that residents had to adjust their schedules to accommodate the event. The 里長 (community chief) also suggested that if such street closures become a regular occurrence, the city government should implement comprehensive support systems and alternative solutions.
The "Xinzhongshan New Life" event, held from 2:30 PM, featured not only a market but also musical performances and a parade. From 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, the city closed several lanes near Nanjing West Road in the Zhongshan commercial district, including lanes 23 and 25, establishing a pedestrian zone and restricting vehicle access.
