Fatal Fall in Taiwan: Elderly Man Indicted for Wife's Death
A tragic case unfolds in New Taipei City as a man faces murder charges in connection with his wife's death.

New Taipei, Taiwan – A somber investigation has led to the indictment of a man in his 70s, identified as Lin (林), on charges of murder following the death of his wife in December of last year. The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office announced the indictment on Thursday, revealing details of the tragic incident.
The prosecutors allege that Lin intentionally pushed his wife out of the window of their 14th-floor apartment in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei, on the morning of December 9th. His wife, who was in her 60s, suffered from hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by fluid buildup in the brain, and was reportedly bedridden at the time of the incident. She fell to her death as a result.
Lin turned himself in later that same day. The New Taipei District Court subsequently granted the prosecutors' motion to detain him, citing concerns that he might attempt to flee the jurisdiction. The New Taipei City Social Welfare Department has indicated that there were no prior records of domestic abuse involving the couple.
Following an extensive investigation, prosecutors concluded on Tuesday that Lin possessed the intent to kill his wife. The case will now proceed to trial, where Lin will face a panel consisting of three judges and six citizen judges.
This case exemplifies the workings of Taiwan's citizen judge system, which was implemented on January 1, 2023. Under this system, citizen judges participate in trials where defendants are accused of intentionally committing crimes that result in death, reflecting a commitment to involving the public in the administration of justice.
