Former Taiwan Transportation Minister Kuo Yao-chi Battles Life-Threatening Aortic Dissection

Former Taiwan Minister of Transportation, Kuo Yao-chi, has reportedly been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after suffering a sudden aortic dissection. Emergency surgery was performed at Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital following the diagnosis.

Reports indicate that Kuo Yao-chi's condition is currently critical, with the former minister under close observation. This severe medical event highlights a condition that has unfortunately affected other well-known figures in Taiwan.

Aortic dissection is a severe cardiovascular emergency characterized by its "swift," "urgent," and "high mortality rate" as noted by the Health Promotion Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. This occurs when blood tears through the inner layer of the aorta, creating a false lumen between the vessel's inner and outer layers. This can disrupt blood supply throughout the body, leading to organ damage and necrosis due to oxygen deprivation.
