Elite Taiwanese Marines Now Secure Taipei's Airport: A Sign of Heightened Vigilance

Taipei, Taiwan – Recent images of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) inspecting Taipei's Songshan Airport have officially confirmed long-standing speculation: elite Taiwanese Marines have been deployed to bolster security at the vital transportation hub.

The Presidential Office released photographs from President Lai’s visit on Friday, showcasing the President alongside Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) and high-ranking military officials. They were pictured in front of a sign clearly identifying the presence of the "66th Marine Brigade's Second Garrison" within the airport’s premises.

The photographs further reveal President Lai being briefed by Marine personnel, solidifying the confirmation of the Marine presence.

Military sources have indicated that the 66th Marine Brigade, a unit specializing in amphibious warfare, counter-landing operations, and reinforcement within the greater Taipei area, has been stationed at the airport since late 2024.

Previously, airport security was solely the responsibility of the Air Force's Military Police squadron.

The deployment of the Marines signifies a significant upgrade in security, with the Marines now working in conjunction with the Air Force Military Police to safeguard this crucial point of entry into the nation's capital.

Sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, also indicated that the Marines have been assigned to protect other strategically important military locations in the capital city.
