Taiwan Receives Strong Support: Belgian Parliament Condemns China's Aggression

In a significant display of international solidarity, the parliament of a European nation has passed a resolution voicing strong support for Taiwan and condemning China's increasingly assertive behavior in the Indo-Pacific region.

The resolution, approved by an overwhelming majority, calls upon the national government to condemn the People's Republic of China's (PRC) aggressive stance toward Taiwan and advocate for a de-escalation of diplomatic interactions with Beijing.

Furthermore, the resolution urges the government to actively champion, within the European Union, the strengthening of existing partnerships with Taiwan. This includes pursuing agreements to fortify resilient supply chains and foster bilateral investments, reflecting a commitment to shared values and principles.

The parliamentarians emphasized the importance of enhancing economic, scientific, cultural, and parliamentary exchanges between their nation and Taiwan, urging the government to collaborate with federated entities in this endeavor.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, the resolution advocates for Taiwan's meaningful participation as an observer in international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), highlighting the importance of Taiwan's contributions on the global stage.

The resolution also explicitly addresses China's escalatory actions, urging it to immediately cease intrusions into Taiwan's air defense identification zone and violations over its peripheral islands, while upholding respect for the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

Furthermore, the resolution condemns China's "gray zone military actions," including cyber and disinformation campaigns, and protests the "continued distortion" of the United Nations Resolution 2758, clarifying that the resolution does not take a position on Taiwan's status.

The parliamentarians also denounced China's "economic coercion" against Taiwan and other democratic nations, deeming such actions "illegal under the rules of the World Trade Organization."

In response, Taiwan's government has expressed its profound gratitude for the support and affirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral interactions and collaborations with the nation.
